As far as products, this is what I have used with three kids or have found it works the best:

Bath soap: Aveeno (doesn't sting the eyes like even the tear free brand can)

Lotion: Baby magic, in the pink bottle. Just cause that is the scent I like the best. Available only on line.

STAY AWAY FROM LAVENDER OR CHAMOMILLE SCENTS UNTIL 6 MONTHS OF AGE, AS THIS CAN TRIGGER ASTHMA OR OTHER ALLERGIES, SAYS SO ON THE BACK OF BOTTLE.

Diapers: Huggies, I thought the other brands didn't fit right or smelled funny, the ones that were scented made my kids break out.

Wipes: Members Mark from Sam's Club. Buy 'em in bulk and they are thick and wet. They are great!!

Bottles: I went with Playtex Nursers with drop in liners. At the time of my first child's birth we didn't have a dishwasher and I was concerned about sanitary conditions. I also liked the fact that I could push on the liner to release all the air from the bottle prior to feeding, resulting in less spit up and colic.

Formula: I breastfed my first for 4 months and then started him on formula.I liked the Enfamil powder the best. It was easy to get the formula to mix without water and I never had a problem with chunks like I did with Similac. Plus I could pre-make the bottles with just the dry formula and then add water when I needed it. As opposed to the liquid, if you don't use it all at a certain time than it goes bad. Plus it is easier to travel with the powder, just take a bottle of water with, the liquid has to be refrigerated.

Pacifiers: If you are planning on breastfeeding and decide to use a pacifier I suggest using the kind that are just a straight nipple, nothing for the child to bite down on to hold it in their mouths. Cause then when the child nurses they will bite down on you to hold your nipple in. I prefer the Walmart brand generics or the Soothie. The Soothie can actually improve their suction and ability to nurse if used properly. If you aren't nursing, go Nuk. I liked them the best. I think that is why my first baby nursed only the 4 months. Nipple preference.

Don't forget the stuff you are gonna need the most but are more than likely to forget:

Baby Mylicon, Great for baby's gassy tummy

Baby Tylenol, A must for baby when she is sick, at least until 6 months and then you can use ibuprofen.

Johnson and Johnson 3 in 1 diaper cream, it is not greasy or stinky, or tacky and hard to wash off. It is the perfect mixture.

If you are nursing:

Lanisoah creme: helps heal even the most painful nipples!

Johnson and Johnson nursing pads, contour to the breast than taper at the edges not leaving huge nursing pad lines to be seen through your shirt.

Those are just the items I preferred. You may find that you have your own preferences and likes. You are gonna find a lot of people have a lot of unsolicited advice for you. Remember you are the parent and you know what is best for your baby, don't let anyone try to tell you otherwise. Best of luck to you!!
References :
start with diapers.......Pampers Swaddlers are the best for newborns. (size newborn or size 1). Wipes - Pampers sensitive, or Huggies Shea butter. Then you would go for baby care products like baby wash and lotions, etc. Johnson and Johnson (lavender) is great. Or just start smelling and find one you like. You'll need a bath tub, washcloths, and hooded towels too (for bath time). That should cover basics. I wouldn't go buy bottles or pacifiers yet, he/she won't need them for at least the first month. You should breastfeed, if you don't you're depriving your child of essential nutrients. Talk to a lactation consultant about anything related to breastfeeding. You'll need a boppy pillow and nursing bras, and some lanolin for sore nipples. If you know what you're having, then you can put some girl/boy clothes on your registry, brands don't matter, just sizes. Make sure that the size will coincide with the time of year. (No brainer). Just a hint (most people don't even check registries, so you'll be lucky to get anything from there.) If you don't already have these things: CRIB AND CAR SEAT always buy new, not used. And of course you'll need a crib set. A stroller, bassinet, swing, bouncer, and changing table are also must haves (depending on your lifestyle and where you live.) Other than that, all your baby will need is you, and lots of you. Good luck!
References :
Johnsons and Johnsons have been a reliable brand to mothers for ages. No more tears shampoo ring a bell. Also another break out star in the baby world is Aveeno. Although more expensive than J&J, it works just as good.

Now if you are talking baby furniture, brand doesnt matter as long as its up to code. Pick out a set and make sure it meets your needs.
Baby clothes are a matter of preference. There are sooooo many brands it would be hard to name it all.
GOOD LUCK!
References :
Look at Consumer Reports and see what is rated as the best - price doesn't always mean the best. I ended up liking Evenflo, they got the best rating on car seats.
References :
www.consumerreports.org
